Acupuncture for Cancer Support

Dr. Karen Lam offers acupuncture as a supportive therapy for individuals undergoing cancer treatment. Her approach is knowledgeable, integrative, and patient-centered, addressing both physical symptom management and emotional well-being during a deeply demanding time.

Acupuncture is commonly used alongside conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation to help calm the nervous system, support the body’s natural healing response, and improve overall quality of life. Treatments are designed to bring the body into a state of deep rest, helping to ease stress, reduce discomfort, and restore a sense of balance during treatment and recovery.

Cancer Support Through the Lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), cancer, historically referred to as Liu, has been described in medical texts dating back to the 16th century. It is understood as a condition involving long-standing stagnation of Qi, bodily fluids, and the meridian energy system. Over time, this stagnation weakens the body’s vitality and ability to maintain balance.

From a TCM perspective, cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation are considered intensely “hot” or depleting in nature. While effective in targeting cancer cells, they can also exhaust Yin, the body’s nourishing and restorative energy. Acupuncture is used to help rebalance Qi and Yin, supporting resilience, digestion, rest, and recovery during treatment.

Today, acupuncture is widely recognized and used around the world as a safe, supportive therapy that complements standard cancer care.
